There\u2019s a reason to ask those questions now more than ever, as the average age in the U.S. is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/publicdata\/explore?ds=d5bncppjof8f9_&amp;met_y=sp_dyn_le00_in&amp;idim=country:USA:GBR:JPN&amp;hl=en&amp;dl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">78<\/a> years old!\u00a0 As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.realtor\/daily-news\/2019\/05\/07\/there-could-be-a-problem-with-multigen-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">41%<\/a> of Americans in the market are searching for a home that can accommodate a multigenerational family.<span id=\"more-39798\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The graph below shows the number of people by generation that purchased a multigenerational home because they will either be taking care of an aging parent or they just want to spend time together.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/15105144\/20190529-MEM-1-1.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39838\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/15105144\/20190529-MEM-1-1.jpg?resize=650%2C366&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Multigenerational Homes Are on the Rise | Simplifying The Market\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a>Of those buyers, 26% indicated they will be taking care of an aging parent, and 14% said they want to spend time with an aging parent. These numbers do not come as a surprise. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/04\/05\/a-record-64-million-americans-live-in-multigenerational-households\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Pew Research Center<\/em><\/a>, 64 million Americans (<em>20% of the population<\/em>) lived in a multigenerational household in 2016 (<em>Last numbers available<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/13150710\/20190529-MEM-2.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39803\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/13150710\/20190529-MEM-2.jpg?resize=650%2C366&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Multigenerational Homes Are on the Rise | Simplifying The Market\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a>An increasing number of studies affirm the benefits of being part of a multigenerational household. These benefits aren\u2019t just for the grandchildren, but for the grandparents as well. According to these two resources:<\/p>\n<h4><em>The<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mother.ly\/news\/benefits-living-near-grandparents-for-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>University of Oxford<\/em><\/a><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cChildren who are close to their grandparents have fewer emotional and behavioral problems and are better able to cope with traumatic life events, like a divorce or bullying at school<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/gerontologist\/article\/56\/3\/408\/2605571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Boston College<\/em><\/a><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cResearchers found that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This research gives helpful insight into why 41% of Americans are in the market to buy a multigenerational home.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a home that could accommodate a multigenerational family and are thinking about selling, now is the perfect time to put it on the market!
