That has caused some to ask experts to project when the next economic slowdown (recession) could occur. Two years ago, 67% of the economists surveyed by the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> (WSJ) for the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/graphics\/econsurvey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Economic Forecasting Survey<\/a><\/em> predicted we would have a recession no later than the end of this year (2020). The same study done just three months ago showed more than one third of the economists still saw an economic slowdown right around the corner.<span id=\"more-41662\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The news caused concern among consumers. This is evidenced by a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2019\/09\/05\/everybody-calm-down-this-is-not-2008\/?a=375140-ca8522ad04357da9549c08492a932f70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a> done by <em>realtor.com<\/em> that shows 53% of home purchasers (first-time and repeat buyers) currently in the market believe a recession will occur by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Wait! It seems the experts are changing their minds\u2026.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Now, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-expansion-expected-to-continue-through-2020-wsj-survey-11576681200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> earlier this month, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> (WSJ) revealed only 14.3% of those economists now believe we\u2019re in danger of a recession occurring this year (see graph below):<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28111836\/20200130-MEM-Eng-1.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41663\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/files.simplifyingthemarket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28111836\/20200130-MEM-Eng-1.jpg?resize=650%2C366&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Strength of the Economy Is Surprising the Experts | Simplifying The Market\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a>The WSJ article strongly stated,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cThe U.S. expansion, now in its 11th year, will continue through the 2020 presidential election with a healthy labor market backing it up, economists say.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This optimism regarding the economy was repeated by others as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/31\/goldman-sachs-is-saying-the-economy-is-nearly-recession-proof.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CNBC, quoting <em>Goldman Sachs<\/em> economists<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cJust months after almost everyone on Wall Street worried that a recession was just around the corner, Goldman Sachs said a downturn is unlikely over the next several years. In fact, the firm\u2019s economists stopped just short of saying that the U.S. economy is recession-proof.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/why-markets-will-gain-despite-looming-risks-barrons-roundtable-panelists-say-51578707631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Barron\u2019s<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen Barron\u2019s gathers some of Wall Street\u2019s best minds\u2014as we do every January for our annual Roundtable\u2014we expect some consensus, some disagreement\u2026But the 10 veteran investors and economists who convened in New York on Jan. 6 at the Barron\u2019s offices agree that there\u2019s almost no chance of a recession this year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2019\/12\/15\/us-economy-shakes-free-recession-fears-striking-turnaround-since-august\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cThe U.S. economy is heading into 2020 at a pace of steady, sustained growth after a series of interest rate cuts and the apparent resolution of two trade-related threats mostly eliminated the risk of a recession.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/personal-finance\/susan-tompor\/2019\/12\/26\/2020-outlook-we-really-avoid-recession\/2673900001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Robert A. Dye, <em>Chief Economist<\/em> at <em>Comerica Bank<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;I expect that the U.S. economy will avoid a recession in 2020.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There probably won\u2019t be a recession this year.
