In a normal year, the peak homebuying season comes to a close by early fall. However, 2020 is anything but a normal year, and the housing market is no exception. Lawrence Yun, <em>Chief Economist<\/em> for the <em>National Association of Realtors<\/em> (NAR), explains:<span id=\"more-43260\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>Home sales traditionally taper off toward the end of the year, but in September they surged beyond what we normally see during this season<\/strong>\u2026I would attribute this jump to record-low interest rates and an abundance of buyers in the marketplace, including buyers of vacation homes given the greater flexibility to work from home<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>What\u2019s drawing so many buyers to the market?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As Yun mentioned, <strong>record-low interest rates<\/strong> are key. Today\u2019s rates are strengthening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2020\/09\/22\/the-cost-of-a-home-is-far-more-important-than-the-price\/?a=375140-ca8522ad04357da9549c08492a932f70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">purchasing power<\/a> for buyers, too. Sam Khater, <em>Chief Economist<\/em> at <em>Freddie Mac<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freddiemac.com\/pmms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">emphasizes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cMortgage rates today are on average <strong>more than a full percentage point lower<\/strong> than rates over the last five years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re a homebuyer right now, there\u2019s no question that you want to take advantage of this opportunity \u2013 and you\u2019re not alone. Competition among buyers is definitely increasing as more buyers enter the market and mortgage interest rates remain so low.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Who\u2019s planning to buy a home right now?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Today\u2019s affordability is appealing to all generations and seems to be especially attractive to younger buyers who want to begin growing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2020\/07\/10\/americans-rank-real-estate-best-investment-for-7-years-running-infographic\/?a=375140-ca8522ad04357da9549c08492a932f70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">wealth<\/a> through homeownership. There\u2019s a distinct increase this year in the percentage of those in younger generations searching for homes. The <em>National Association of Home Builders<\/em> (NAHB) <a href=\"http:\/\/eyeonhousing.org\/2020\/10\/covid-19-has-impacted-home-purchasing-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cBetween the third quarters of 2019 and 2020, the share of Gen Z adults planning a home purchase rose three points to 14%.
